Baffin Bay Map

Baffin Bay

Baffin Bay is located between Baffen Island and Greenland and is connected to the North Atlantic Ocean via Davis Strait and the Labrador Sea. The bay is named after William Baffin, who was the first person to navigate the bay in 1616. The bay has an area of around 689,000 km2 and is not navigable most of the year to its high density of floating ice and icebergs. The exception is the North Water Polynya, an area of open water surrounded by sea ice. It lies in the north of the bay and creates a warm microclimate, where most of the bay’s aquatic life is concentrated in.
